Barium Sulphate
Product Description
Information obtained in these studies is based on material and Laboratory tests believed to be reliable, however no guarantee is implied or expressed regarding the accuracy of these data or the products.
Barium Sulphate is a filler in polymers that react and a white pigment used in works of art. Barium Sulphate, which is nearly transparent, is used as a filler or to change the consistency of oil paint. It is also a component of oil well drilling fluid because it makes the fluid denser. Most photographic paper is first coated with a thin layer of Barium Sulphate, or baryta, to increase the reflectiveness of the image. Barium Sulphate is also used as a catalyst support when selectively hydrogenating functional groups that are susceptible to over-reduction and as a release material when casting copper anode plates.

Details:
Barium Sulphate (or sulphate) is the inorganic compound with the chemical formula BaSO4.It is a white crystalline solid that is odourless and insoluble in water. About 80% of the world’s barium sulphate production, mostly purified mineral is consumed as a component of oil well drilling fluid. It increases the density of the fluid. The majority of synthetic Barium Sulphate is used as a component of white pigment for paints. A thin layer of Barium Sulphate called baryta is first coated on the base surface of most photographic paper to increase the reflectiveness of the image. In polypropylene and polystyrene plastics, it is used as a filler in proportions up to 70%. It has an effect of increasing acid and alkali resistance and opacity.
Barium Sulphate in suspension is frequently used clinically as a radio contrast agent for X-ray imaging and other diagnostic procedures. Barium Sulphate is also used during the procedure of the soil pH test. Barium sulfate is used as a catalyst support. It is also used in Pyrotechnics formulas. As Barium Sulphate has high burning point and is insoluble in water, it is used as a coating material in casting of copper anode plates.
